A new chapter begins in Sourav Ganguly’s journey as the former Indian captain and ex-BCCI president takes on his first-ever coaching role. On Sunday, August 24, he was officially named the head coach of SA20 franchise Pretoria Capitals for the 2026 season.
He takes over from former England batter Jonathan Trott, who stepped down on August 23. Announcing the news on Instagram, the Centurion-based franchise wrote: “The Prince is ready to bring his royal flair to the Capitals camp! We are thrilled to welcome Sourav Ganguly as our new head coach.”
Adding further strength to the management, the Capitals also confirmed the appointment of Shaun Pollock as their assistant coach, hailing it as a new era of brilliance for the side.
Ganguly’s connection with the Capitals franchise runs deep. Between 2018 and 2019, he served as the team director of IPL side Delhi Capitals, stepping down when he assumed the role of BCCI president. More recently, in 2023, he was named JSW Sports’ director of cricket, continuing his close association with the franchise ecosystem.
This marks Ganguly’s first official role as a head coach, but his ambitions in this space have long been clear. He has openly expressed interest in leading the Indian team one day, making his appointment with Pretoria Capitals an important step toward that larger goal.
With Ganguly’s tactical acumen and Pollock’s experience, Pretoria Capitals fans will be eager to see the duo usher in success in the 2026 SA20 season.
