India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, has successfully undergone surgery for a sports hernia in his lower right abdomen in Munich, Germany. The surgery went smoothly, and the 34-year-old batting star is now in recovery. As per the BCCI, Suryakumar is likely to start his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru within the next two weeks.
The dynamic batter shared an encouraging update with fans on Wednesday through social media, saying: “Life update: I’ve undergone surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful that it went smoothly and I’m already on the path to recovery. Eager to return soon!”
A sports hernia is a soft tissue injury in the groin or lower abdomen that affects muscles, tendons, or ligaments—often seen in athletes due to repeated twisting or turning motions. This marks Suryakumar’s third surgery in as many years, after undergoing ankle surgery in 2023 and a similar hernia operation in 2024.
Suryakumar’s most recent on-field appearance was in the IPL 2025, where he had an outstanding season for the Mumbai Indians. He tallied 717 runs, the most ever scored by a non-opener in a single IPL season, and also the highest by any MI batter in a campaign. His record-breaking stretch of 16 consecutive 25+ scores stood out, earning him the coveted Player of the Tournament award.
The timing of the surgery was deliberate, aligning with a gap in India’s international calendar to avoid missing critical fixtures. Before opting for the procedure, Suryakumar played in the T20 Mumbai League, where he captained Triumph Knights Mumbai North East and scored 122 runs in five innings.
India is currently engaged in a Test series against England, scheduled to end on August 4, and will subsequently travel to Bangladesh for a limited-overs series consisting of three ODIs and three T20Is. While Suryakumar hasn’t featured in ODIs since the 2023 World Cup final, he is expected to return to the national side on August 26 in Chattogram, where he will resume leadership of the T20I squad.
Since becoming India’s T20I captain after the T20 World Cup win in June 2024, Suryakumar Yadav has played a key role in leading the team through a major generational shift. With veterans Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retiring, the team has adopted a fearless, youthful style. Under his leadership, India has regularly crossed 250-run marks, including a massive 297 against Bangladesh — the second-highest total in T20I history.
Suryakumar’s return is highly anticipated as India continues to forge a bold new identity in white-ball cricket. Should his recovery proceed as planned, he will be back in action just in time to lead the next T20I series and continue shaping the post-World Cup phase of Indian cricket.
