In a scintillating display of cricketing prowess, Virat Kohli set the 2024 IPL season alight with a masterful century, powering Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to a commanding score against the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on Saturday. Kohli’s breathtaking innings not only set the tone for RCB’s batting but also etched his name deeper into the annals of IPL history.
Winning the toss and electing to field, Rajasthan Royals might have expected to keep things tight against a formidable RCB batting lineup. However, Kohli, alongside Faf du Plessis, had other plans. The duo stitched together a 125-run partnership for the opening wicket, laying a solid foundation for RCB. While du Plessis played the perfect foil, it was Kohli who took the Rajasthan bowlers to the cleaners.
Kohli, known for his prowess in chasing targets, showed his mettle in setting one this time, reaching his hundred off just 67 balls. His innings were a blend of aggressive strokeplay and smart cricket, as he found the boundary with ease and rotated the strike effectively. The RCB captain seemed in sublime touch, eventually finishing the innings unbeaten on 113 off 72 balls, equalling his highest score in the IPL.
This century, Kohli’s eighth in the IPL, takes him to the top of the leaderboard for the most centuries by any batter in the tournament’s history. It also marks his ninth T20 century, the highest by an Indian, overtaking Rohit Sharma, who has seven to his name.
Moreover, Kohli’s century puts him third on the list of most T20 centuries by an opener, a list that is led by the explosive Chris Gayle with 22 centuries and followed by Babar Azam with 11. Kohli’s achievement is a testament to his enduring class and versatility across formats, underlining his status as one of the modern greats of the game.
Ending their innings at 183 for three, RCB set a challenging total for the Rajasthan Royals, thanks in large part to Kohli’s heroic efforts. His century not only sets the stage for an exciting match but also raises the bar for batting performances in the IPL 2024 season.
