In a dominant display of cricket, the West Indies overpowered newcomers Uganda by 134 runs in their T20 World Cup Group C match. Playing on familiar home turf, the West Indies leveraged their experience and key contributions from their batsmen to post an imposing total.
After being put in to bat first, the West Indies accumulated 173 for five in their allotted 20 overs. Johnson Charles led the charge with a solid 44, while Andre Russell added a quickfire 30 not out towards the end of the innings. Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell, and Sherfane Rutherford also chipped in with valuable runs, scoring 22, 23, and 22 respectively. Brian Masaba emerged as the pick of the Ugandan bowlers, claiming two wickets for 31 runs.
Chasing a formidable target of 174, Uganda faltered from the start. The West Indies’ left-arm spinner, Akeal Hosein, wreaked havoc, returning with figures of 5 for 11. His exceptional performance decimated the Ugandan batting line-up, which could only muster 39 runs in 12 overs. Hosein’s clinical spell ensured a comprehensive victory for the two-time T20 world champions, making it a thoroughly one-sided contest.
This victory marks West Indies’ second successive win in the tournament, boosting their confidence and standing in Group C.
With this resounding win, the West Indies have further cemented their position as strong contenders in the T20 World Cup, while Uganda will look to regroup and learn from the experience in their upcoming matches.
