Worcestershire County Cricket Club is reeling from the tragic loss of 20-year-old spin bowler Josh Baker, who passed away unexpectedly. Baker, a rising star in the cricketing world, had been with the club since his youth and made a significant impact during his time with the team.
Baker’s journey with Worcestershire began when he turned professional in 2021, showcasing immense talent and dedication from the outset. His first-class debut against Warwickshire at New Road marked the beginning of a promising career that was tragically cut short.
In his tenure with Worcestershire, Baker made 22 first-class appearances, leaving an indelible mark with 43 wickets to his name. His contributions extended beyond the field, as he played a vital role in the club’s camaraderie, earning the respect and admiration of teammates and staff alike.
Ashley Giles, the chief executive officer at Worcestershire, said everyone at the club is very sad about Josh’s death. He said Josh wasn’t just a teammate, but like family to them. They’ll all miss him a lot.
Baker’s passion for cricket was evident in his performances across various formats, including 17 List A matches and eight T20s. Additionally, he represented England under-19s on two occasions, demonstrating his potential on the international stage.
The sudden loss of Baker has sent shockwaves through the cricketing community, with tributes pouring in from across the country. Worcestershire County Cricket Club released a statement expressing their heartbreak and pledging support to Baker’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
Plans for tributes to honor Baker’s memory are underway, with the club emphasizing the importance of privacy and respect for his loved ones. The Professional Cricketers’ Association and the England and Wales Cricket Board have also offered their condolences, highlighting the impact of Baker’s passing on the broader cricketing fraternity.
